The Russian Scientific Research Institute of the Development of Social Network, which operates the .RU extension announced this week that the 1 millionth domain name has now been sold.
The domain in question? Hanti.ru, registered by Cyberbox Limited on Monday, September 17.
This news comes hot on the heels of a recent Verisign report that showed .RU was the second fastest growing country-code extension.
Trouble is looming though for the .SU extension as they fight with ICANN to stop the extension being deleted. ICANN has again, “urged the current .SU operators to make it clear to the .SU registrants the issues surrounding the domain, as well as to freeze new registrations until its future is clear” .
In true Russian response the .SU operators have announced an 80% price cut to celebrate their 17 year anniversary and plans for a new IDN .SU. This would bring the pricing for .SU into line with .RU and significantly boost registration numbers.
While the .SU Registry are keen to stress “relations are friendly” with ICANN this dispute does seem to be escalating.
