Yandex Start To Index Non-Russian Internet

Yandex has announced that they will now be indexing documents in languages other than Russian. Previously they had kept non-Russian content out of their index, but now accept that their user base want to search for International or non-Russian sites. They often do this via Yandex’s main rival in Russia, Google.

As a stop-gap measure they included links to western search engines at the foot of their page. This offers convenience but will not keep the users within their brand. Their aim is to index English, French and German documents initially, with a view to including more languages in the future. Yandex are also building an index in Ukrainian, with Yandex.ua, where they are competiting with Google.co.ua for the market.

When asked what criteria they are looking for in non-Russian sites, sources in the company said that popularity and authority would be key factors.
